KK Park, located south of the boundary community of Myawaddy, has been linked with online fraud, money laundering and forced labor for the past five years. Thousands were attracted to the complex with promises of lucrative jobs, and then coerced to run sophisticated frauds, taking substantial sums of currency from victims throughout the globe. The junta, previously stained by its connections to the deception business, now says it has occupied the complex as it extends authority around Myawaddy, the main economic link to Thailand. Military Advancement and Strategic Goals In recent weeks, the junta has pushed back insurgents in various areas of Myanmar, aiming to expand the number of territories where it can conduct a scheduled poll, commencing in December. It currently doesn't control significant territories of the state, which has been torn apart by conflict since a military coup in February 2021. The election has been dismissed as a fraud by resistance groups who have pledged to block it in regions they control. Beginnings and Development of KK Park KK Park started with a rental contract in the first part of 2020 to construct an business complex between the Karen National Union (KNU), the rebel faction which dominates much of this area, and a little-known Hong Kong publicly traded company, Huanya International. Investigators suspect there are links between Huanya and a prominent Chinese mafia figure Wan Kuok Koi, better known as Broken Tooth, who has subsequently funded further scam centers on the frontier. The compound developed swiftly, and is easily visible from the Thailand border of the frontier. Those who succeeded to flee from it describe a harsh system enforced on the numerous individuals, many from African nations, who were detained there, made to operate long hours, with torture and beatings administered on those who did not manage to achieve targets. A Starlink satellite dish on the upper level of a facility at the complex compound Current Developments and Statements A statement by the junta's communications department stated its personnel had "cleared" KK Park, freeing over 2,000 workers there and taking possession of 30 of Elon Musk's Starlink satellite terminals – extensively utilized by fraud centers on the Thai-Myanmar boundary for online functions. The declaration faulted what it called the "extremist" KNU and volunteer people's defence forces, which have been combating the military since the overthrow, for illegally occupying the territory. The junta's assertion to have dismantled this notorious fraud facility is very likely aimed at its key backer, China. Beijing has been urging the junta and the Thailand administration to do more to terminate the illegal businesses managed by Chinese networks on their border. In previous months numerous of China-based laborers were extracted of deception facilities and sent on special flights back to China, after Thailand restricted availability to energy and petroleum resources. Wider Situation and Continuing Functions But KK Park is only one of no fewer than 30 comparable complexes situated on the border. Most of these are under the guardianship of local armed units allied to the regime, and many are currently operating, with numerous individuals running schemes inside them. In reality, the backing of these militia groups has been essential in assisting the junta drive back the KNU and other rebel organizations from land they captured over the past two years. The junta now governs nearly all of the route linking Myawaddy to the other parts of Myanmar, a goal the junta established before it holds the opening round of the vote in December. It has captured Lay Kay Kaw, a recent settlement created for the KNU with Asian investment in 2015, a era when there had been aspirations for permanent stability in Karen State following a national truce. That represents a more important blow to the KNU than the seizure of KK Park, from which it obtained a certain amount of funds, but where the majority of the economic gains ended up with military-aligned paramilitary forces. A well-placed insider has indicated that fraud operations is continuing in KK Park, and that it is possible the junta seized only part of the sprawling compound. The contact also believes Beijing is giving the Myanmar junta rosters of Asian persons it wants extracted from the scam facilities, and sent back to stand trial in China, which may explain why KK Park was targeted.
