Kalimuendo Scores as Nottingham Forest Secure Sentimental Triumph Against Malmö

“Champions of Europe, you’ll never sing that,” echoed around the ground as Forest followers celebrated a further success against their Swedish opponents. A great deal has occurred since Francis's winning header clinched the continental trophy in the year 1979, but Forest continue to treasure those glorious moments. Equally, major shifts have occurred in the five weeks since Sean Dyche assumed control, with Forest looking refreshed and securing a convincing win thanks to goals from Kalimuendo, Yates, and Nikola Milenkovic, enhancing their hopes of progressing in the European competition.

Gaining Momentum with Another Straight Win

For Nottingham Forest, this performance – against a Swedish side that had been inactive for nearly a month after finishing in sixth place in their home competition – marked a third straight win across every tournament and further built on the positive energy generated from last weekend’s stunning victory at Liverpool. While this match was a re-run of the club's historic success in name, the game itself was free of any real tension or jitters.

It proved to be an event dripping in nostalgia, an eagerly awaited meeting and the third meeting between the teams since the showpiece event 46 years ago.

The home side fully embraced the heritage, paying tribute to the heroes of 1979 by giving them, along with their Malmö opponents, the VIP welcome. 13 members of the Malmö's squad from then were also in attendance. Both teams enjoyed a meal together before the kick-off. Forest legends and company received a rousing reception when they gathered on the pitch a quarter of an hour before the start, and a characteristically impressive display was shown in the home stand.

Recalling the Past

“30th May 1979, Robertson crossed it in from the left,” read one part of a large tifo, in capital letters. While nobody needed reminding of what ensued, the remaining section was revealed as the players emerged from the tunnel. “There is Francis,” it continued. A second brilliant display showed Brian Clough observing proceedings beside his right-hand man Taylor on a dugout at the Olympiastadion.

Control from the Start

So, the hosts had soaked up those wonderful recollections, but what about the showing on the night? It was strong, too. They were in complete control from the moment the forward whistled an effort off target inside two minutes and established a two-goal lead by the half-time interval. Nicolás Domínguez sent an early header wide and then Abbott, on his maiden European start, had a go.

It seemed appropriate that Yates, who joined the club aged eight, made the initial breakthrough in the visitors' defence captained by their own academy product captain, Pontus Jansson, formerly of Leeds and Brentford. The home defender Nikola Milenkovic saw a delivery deflect off a defender and into the pathway of Yates, who finished with his right foot from the edge of the penalty area to score his first goal since last March.

Second Goal Seals Dominance

The scorer was implicated in Forest’s second goal on the verge of half-time, too, his free header saved by Malmö’s goalkeeper Ellborg but the alert forward poised to convert the rebound from point-blank range. James McAtee, the midfielder handed a rare start and only his second appearance since September, was the spark, lofting a delicious ball towards his teammate at the far post.

Just moments before, Hudson-Odoi’s low effort was deflected aside off Malmö defender Rösler, the son of ex- Man City forward Uwe, and an unmarked Milenkovic had previously had a powerful header smartly saved by the keeper, who returned in place of the ex- Aston Villa goalkeeper Olsen.

Opponent's Difficulties

This was Malmö’s initial game since the Swedish Allsvenskan concluded on 9 November, and they found it hard to equal the home team's intensity. Forest extended the lead to three when Milenkovic scored after his defensive colleague Murillo headed back a set-piece. Yates had a shot stopped, but the Serbian defender Milenkovic pounced on the leftovers.

Forest then pushed for more, with Hudson-Odoi dinking a right-foot shot on to the bar before Sangaré sent an ambitious effort off target from distance. It was that kind of nights. The manager, aware of the upcoming domestic fixture here against Brighton & Hove Albion, implemented multiple alterations from the side that surprised Liverpool at their ground recently, when they additionally scored three goals, though he called on Elliot Anderson, Dan Ndoye and Igor Jesus midway through the final period.

Smooth Night for the Team

It proved a flawless night for Nottingham Forest. Dyche could withdraw Murillo with the game already sewn up and later brought on 19-year-old defender Jimmy Sinclair for his first-team debut. He talked about the Forest old guard supplying “valuable insights” at regular meetings and, nearly fifty years on, the present squad showed they are able of producing of thrills, too.
